Dental veneers are shells that are custom-made that are designed to cover the outer surface to improve the look of teeth. These are adjusted on the outer of the teeth to change the size, color, and shape. Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers) are made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers can outlast stains much better than resin veneers.

Dental veneers are used to fix the problem of teeth that are worn down, chipped or broken, discolored, misaligned or uneven teeth and teeth with gaps between them.

Indulging yourself in the process of dental veneer is quite simple. One tooth or many teeth can undergo the process simultaneously. The process of dental veneers includes:-

Foremost the dentist will examine the teeth to make sure if the dental veneers are suitable for you. The dentist may also recommend X-rays just to know more detailed impressions of the mouth and teeth.

To prepare a tooth veneer, the dentist will remove around half a millimeter of enamel from the front surface of the tooth, equal to the thickness of the veneer shells to be added to the tooth surface. Before the process of trimming off the enamel, the dentist will check for the requirement of anesthetic to numb the area, to reduce pain. Later, the dentist will make a structure of your tooth and sent that to a dental laboratory to make veneer. Moreover, around 2-3 weeks are required by the laboratory to give veneer back to the dentist. Temporary dental veneers can be placed in respect of any tooth.

Before fixing the dental veneer in the tooth, firstly the dentist will properly clean and polish the tooth as it resists the tooth to make strong connectivity. To fix the veneer on the tooth, some special kind of cement is applied on the dental veneer and as the veneer holds the position on the tooth, a special light beam is positioned by the dentist on the tooth, which activates chemicals in the cement that make it hard.

The last step involves removing all the excess cement and making the final adjustment in the veneer. The process is followed by certain advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of veneers is they provide a natural tooth appearance, gum tissue handles porcelain well, and they are stain resistant. It is beneficial for those who want to change a tooth’s color and shape. While the disadvantages are, this process is not reversible, not repairable and it is costly also. Veneers sometimes do not match the color of the other teeth and can still get decay. Sometimes, the veneers crack and chip if the people have the habit of grind their teeth.

The veneers usually sustain for 7 to 15 years, as after this time, the veneers need to be replaced as per the requirement. The dental veneers do not need much attention and care but good oral hygiene practices are important to maintain veneers.
